For more than a century now, Montblanc of Hamburg, Germany, has meticulously manufactured the definitive fountain pen. Influenced by some of Rudyard Kipling’s most famous work, the pen is a celebration of all things Kipling, from the engraved lines of the seminal poem, If, that decorate the cap top and cone ring, to the clip. I remember hearing fellow seasoned collectors saying, “Soennecken no longer exists because it pays too much attention to good quality.”In at number 13 we have the Montblanc Writers Edition Homage to Rudyard Kipling Tribute to IF Fountain Pen Limited Edition 1895. I can ignore most Mont Blanc models with ease (save the 139 and 149), but I will stop for the humblest of Soennecken pens.
We would know that there’s a famous fountain pen brand that comes from Germany. It may be worth mentioning that if Soennecken moved its factories out of Germany before the WW2 like Mont Blanc did, and retained its original logo for its entirety, we may have never heard about Mont Blanc or Pelikan today. Back in the 50s and 60s, with the invention of ball-point pens, most pen manufacturers are finding ways to cut costs, such as producing second tier pens with plastic parts (Mont Blanc began to produce cheaper models with thinner barrels, if I remember correctly, the 32s, 24s are good examples of the era these pens are brilliant writers, but prone to cracks in the barrel due to its thinness), Soennecken still used brass parts for the majority of its pen models, save the student pens and economical models. Call it stubbornness if you may, but I do love its products to the heart. But the quality part is so darn true. Sadly the fountain pen business wasn’t among the ones they resurrected.
Ebay proved me wrong so many times on this one. I used to think that Soennecken 444 only came in the colour black. Soennecken also issued some cute little models in the 1950s called the Soennecken 10 and Soennecken Pony. For all I know, there’s a whole other world of Swiss Soenneckens, and Scandinavian Soenneckens. Information is too scattered and actual specimen are too scarce to be iron-clad certain for many of the models listed.
